My book review of 'The Knitting Circle' by Ann Hood

Having taken up knitting again after a long break, I've become rather hooked, and I do like books with a theme. This isn't grand literature but, for its type, it's a pleasurable read.

The structure of this book is familiar, and therefore quite safe and soothing - the central character joins a knitting group and gets to know each of the other women, little by little, chapter by chapter. They all have a reason for being there - overcoming bereavement, disappointment or a concern of some sort, and they find release and healing through meeting with the other women, forging friendships and progressing with their craft.

Many people do find knitting a therapy, I've found recently, so one of the character's comments did ring true:

"'You know rosary beads?' she said. 'Knitting is like that. One stitch is like a prayer, just like each bead is a prayer. It's perfect for contemplation.'"

The book doesn't hold any surprises particularly, but the characters are well drawn and it isn't too twee or overly sentimental. It's a gentle, relaxing, escapist read.

It is very similar to 'The Friday Night Knitting Club' by Kate Jacobs although that has more direction with the story, and ultimately is quite sad. But another good read.
